On Thursday night in Los Angeles via live webcast, Elon Musk unveiled Tesla’s sexy new Model 3, their much anticipated, affordable, electric car, launching a phenomenal response reminiscent of the launch of Apple’s iPhone. Immediately orders soared reaching 276,000 globally in three days, with people standing in line outside Tesla showrooms from Hong Kong to Vancouver to deposit $1,000 and secure their car. The response seemed to even surprise CEO Musk as he mused on his Twitter feed, “Definitely going to need to rethink production planning.”
Available in 2017, the vehicle has a base price of $35,000 and can go 215 miles per charge, with Musk estimating the average cost would be $42,000 with options. The Model 3 resembles the Model S with a shorter frame, panoramic glass roof and elongated hood. Featuring Tesla’s touchscreen dashboard, seating for five adults, supercharging capabilities, autopilot safety features, a 5-star safety rating, and the ability to go from 0 to 60 in under 60 seconds, this car is as safe as it is exciting.
A thrilling moment in automotive history, the Tesla M0del 3 could be the car that revolutionizes the electric vehicle market, in the manner the iPhone did for smartphones. It remains to be seen but if preliminary orders are anything to go by, it seems imminent with a ride that is smart, sexy, and electric!
