kristen bell, this bag saves lives, this bar saves lives

By Beth Doane, Contributing Editor

Kristen Bell is widely respected as a beautiful and talented actress, but she is also passionate about creating profound ways to make a difference in the world.

Screen Shot 2015-07-16 at 11.55.45 PMIn 2013 she co-founded the brand This Bar Saves Lives with three other actor/activists. The gourmet snack brand is created with all-natural, gluten-free, non-GMO, Fair Trade ingredients made with care right here in America, and for each bar sold, they deliver a packet of life-saving food to a child in need.

This year Kristen is launching a special edition bag she co-designed called This Bag Saves Lives. For each bag sold, the company will provide a malaria treatment to a person in need of the medication. “A few years ago, we set out to create a company that infuses philanthropy into everyday items to help save lives around the world,” shares Bell. “In the first year of business, via sales of our gourmet granola bars, we provided more than 350,000 packets of life-saving nutrients to children in danger of dying from malnutrition. We designed This Bag Saves Lives to be an easy and cost-effective way to empower consumers to help stop Malaria from claiming innocent lives by offering lifesaving treatments with each purchase.

Kristen co-designed the bag with the brand Apolis and the classic jute tote is sustainably handcrafted by artisans in Bangladesh, 100% vegan, made from recycled materials, and features a waterproof lining to protect your fresh veggies and cold vino. To distribute the treatments, This Bar Saves Lives has partnered with FIMRC (Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children) who have been working hard to help the over 200 million people suffering from malaria worldwide.

An adventure junky’s best friend.

I’m active, I exercise every day—run, cycle, hike, paddle board—I work hard, I play hard, and I strategically nourish my body with sustenance that will aid me in maintaining my on-the-go lifestyle. For me a key element each day is a banana; whether it’s plain, with peanut butter, on my oatmeal, or blended in my daily smoothie, a banana makes an appearance in my diet. The potassium in a banana aids hydration, while warding off muscle cramps and bloating.

The only beef I have with the golden fruit is that it is sensitive. It bruises, it browns, it gets squished on most adventures. So when I was introduced to Barnana, it appeared to be a Godsend.

Barnanas chewy prepackaged dehydrated bananas, ready to go on any escapade. Each little bag packs three to four bananas. Beyond the traditional flavor, there is apple cinnamon (which tastes just like banana bread) and coconut, and they additionally come coated in a peanut butter, chocolate, or expresso glaze. The expresso with banana may sound a little out there, but surprisingly, it was my favorite. All-organic, no GMOs, and fair trade, this Brazilian banana creation is everything we love.

Barnana is the brainchild of Brazilian native and retired professional triathlete, Caue Suplicy. His father used to make the chewy super snack for him as a kid, and Caue brought the snack with him to America as he competed across the country. At the positive responses of other athletes and friends, Caue devoted himself to developing the high-potassium snack with a belief in sustainable, organic whole foods.

Leonardo DiCaprio purchased a massive rock!

No, we aren’t talking a symbolic gem for his honey, but rather a massive 104 acres off of the coast of Belize. DiCaprio made the purchase of the island, Blackadore Caye, 10 years ago for $1.75 million dollars, but has held off on construction until he found the right developer to create the eco resort of his dreams. According to the NY Times, after a decade of patience, DiCaprio has brought Restorative Islands L.L.C. on to do the job, which is expected to be ready for guests in 2018.

His idea for the property is to develop it in a way that is not just sustainable, but actually healing for the surrounding environment. The project is being called, “Blackadore Caye, a Restorative Island.” One restorative effort DiCaprio is implementing is the building of an artificial reef to improve the breeding of local marine life. Blockader Caye has a history of being overfished, and DiCaprio hopes to aid the growth of wild populations.

The resort is going to be constructed on the forefront of sustainability and luxury. Its development will be held to the stringent standard of the Living Building Challenge, while infusing extravagant  details comparable to those dreamt up in the world of “Tomorrowland.” From adjustable lighting to complement one’s circadian rhythms, to energy self-sufficiency, this island is everything one could dream of for an eco-lux destination. Guests can vacation in one of the resort’s 60 villas, and those wishing never to leave will have 48 estate homes to choose from, with price tags ranging from $5 to 50 million.

We have seen eco resorts, hotels, and spas–but whole islands purchased by a talented, handsome actor looking to improve the world? This could be the start of something wonderful.

We love great skincare tricks and skincare expert Kerry Benjamin recently filled us in on one of the most powerful tools in the business.

10378067_891563937567205_5032534682092749431_nMeet your new best friend—the Ice roller. Ice rollers are used often in Asia and are incredibly easy devices that provide powerful results every time. Our favorite is from Hansderma who also happen to make a powerful and pure Squalane serum that is 100% Natural.

Our other serum obsession is found in Kerry’s new Stacked Skincare Line that she created to give you a rock star style facial treatment outside the spa. We can’t get enough of this product either—but back to the ice roller. The ice roller can be used with or without a serum and is a handheld device that you simply roll across the face. The cool icy feeling is great but even better is that it reduces redness, puffy eyes, and can even firm skin.

Check out these products and more at stackedskincare.com and hansderma.net.

cups, eco, giving back, RECYCLED PLASTIC, recycling, starbucks

By Kelly Calagna, Managing Editor

Starbucks has always been a company associated with green—from their iconic mermaid, to their smocks, to their bold logo, But there is even more green to starbucks than meets the eye. Starbucks has long held sustainability initiatives behind the scenes, making an admirable effort to lessen their impact on the planet.

SBX20101027_9723_comp_200_r1.JPGOne such effort is their $1 reusable cup, use of which saves cups, lids, and a dime from each beverage purchase. It’s an inexpensive way for customers to make a difference. The cup, available in “tall” or “grande,” is recommended for 30 uses, and baristas will even sanitize it before each refill. Once the one buck cup is worn out, it can be thrown in the recycling bin. The design of the cup is intended to look just like the company’s iconic white cups—sporting everything from the symbolic green mermaid to the order boxes, because as Starbucks’ Director of Environmental Impact, Jim Hanna states, “The iconic white cup is our billboard.” Also, for some people, holding a classic Starbucks cup is part of an image they want to maintain.

Starbucks_Coffee_Mugs_Apron.JPGAnother initiative Starbucks is starting to push to the forefront of customers’ minds is the use of their ceramic mugs. Little do most customers know, but you can ask your barista to have your coffee “for here,” and they will provide your drink in a homey ceramic mug. This “for here” option will save paper cups, plastic lids, and cardboard sleeves from being used extraneously by customers enjoying their beverages within the store.

You can get yourself a one buck cup in stores, and if you want  to learn more about Starbucks’ many other sustainability efforts, click here.

In a quiet corner of south east Italy a great white structure cuts an impressive figure in an otherwise typically modest Italian landscape.

The hotel is vast and magnificent, complete with 63 rooms, 28 villas, 72 Apulian townhouses, three swimming pools, two restaurants, one Ballroom, an 18-hole golf course and a Roman style spa.

Spread over 250 acres of ancient olive groves and prickly pears, it is built entirely from local limestone in the form of a village –complete with clock towers, piazzas and narrow alleyways. Inside are high ceilings, glass bottle lights, flickering candles, good luck charms and browned pages from old books adorn the walls. Small troughs of wheat grains and nuts align the hallways – all tributes to the local culture – and lavender scents the air.

Ingredients at each restaurant are largely homegrown and anything else is sourced locally.

09_i31_Borgo_Egnazia_Credit_Images_to_Borgo_EgnaziaIt did not take us long before making a beeline for the Romanesque haven of tranquility that is The Vair spa, complete with a cinema room, 14 treatment rooms, spa suite with garden, steam room and infusion bar, salt and basil-infused Apulian Sauna, heated indoor pool and even ‘roman goddesses’ in the form of the therapists dressed in traditional robes.

For the ultimate relaxation, I opted for a signature Roman-Apulian wet experience. Yes, I know it sounds a little dubious so let me explain. The treatment involves going from the Ancient Roman bath, to the Tepidarium, then Caldarium and after to the Figidarium. The finale is a full body scrub and wash, which leaves your skin smelling of sweet lavender oils and you feeling fully recharged and invigorated. Which, needless to say, was also the way we felt when it was time to leave Borgo Egnazia.
