At a moment when many beauty companies still turn a blind eye to the quality, safety and sourcing of their ingredients, the founder of Intelligent Nutrients, Horst Rechelbacher, sits comfortably in his post, light years ahead of the rest. You see, not only are Intelligent Nutrients products certified organic and manufactured with 100% renewable energy, they’re actually edible. If you’re familiar with Intelligent Nutrients, you may know that Rechelbacher is not averse to consuming a little Intelligent Nutrients hairspray (cut with Pellegrino, of course) to hit home his point: there need not be a different standard for the ingredients we put on our bodies than for the foods that go in them. At the core of the brand is the theory, which Rechelbacher labels ‘nutritional chemistry,’ that food ingredients are more easily identifiable- thus more readily usable- to the body. “We have merged food science and cosmetic chemistry to create a new paradigm in beauty…it is based on using only certified organic food-derived ingredients- substances the body recognizes and readily assimilates as nutrients in the body,” Rechelbacher says. Suddenly we have a new way to think about ‘beauty food.

Beauty
Having tried the line and heard the raves of other beauty editors (as well as famous fans like Naomi Campbell and Trudie Styler), I’m wholly on board with this new direction in beauty, but not because I’d someday like my night cream to double as a nightcap. The bottom line is that Intelligent Nutrients products impressed just about everyone with their efficacy. When Intelligent Nutrients debuted in 2008, the brand’s initial offerings were limited to haircare, aromatics and select body products like lip balm and body wash. At the time of the launch, we were also introduced to the nutrient-dense, mega-antioxidant Intellimune Oil, a blend of seed oils from black cumin, pumpkin, red raspberry, red grape and cranberry that protects from environmental damage and boosts immunity. One to two teaspoons of Intellimune Oil, marketed as both a nutritional supplement and a facial oil, delivers antioxidant benefits equal to that of the seeds of ten pounds of grapes, eleven pounds of blueberries, twenty pounds of strawberries or thirty pounds of tomatoes. The seed oils that make up Intellimune Oil are found in some form in all Intelligent Nutrients products, from Lip Delivery Nutrition balm to Organic Volumizing Spray.
Spring 2009 marked the launch of the Intelligent Nutrients certified organic anti-aging skincare line, which includes a cleanser, hydrating mist, serum and cream. One refreshing quality of the range is that it’s designed for all skin types. How does one skincare line suit mature, dry, oily and sensitive skin all at once? These products balance skin’s moisture and pH, rather than stripping its healthy, natural oils. Both dry and oily skin extremes benefit from this natural equilibrium, which results in the plump, smooth and gorgeous skin that everyone has begun to associate with Intelligent Nutrients. And young, wrinkle-free users who aren’t in the market for anti-aging skincare, take note: these products offer serious prevention and nutrition that allows skin to thrive at any age.
Aromatherapy-based organic fragrances are another unique gem of Intelligent Nutrients. Each scent blend is packed with essential oils and plant extracts that imbue them with a multitude of therapeutic uses.

Beauty
They’re safe (and beneficial) for skin, body and hair and, with names like Wake Up, Feel Good, Take Comfort and Feed the Mind, they double as products for meditation, massage and relaxation. The herbal, earthy essence of these scents conveys far greater depth than the effervescent, perfume-based scents to which we are so accustomed. Intelligent Nutrients aromas hit upon something entirely fulfilling to the senses. Inhale the spicy gourmand aroma of Make Love and I promise that you’ll want it to be your signature scent this fall!
As you look more closely at each Intelligent Nutrients product, it’s clear that the brand is about creativity and innovation as much as it is a model for ingredient purity, effectiveness and ethical sourcing. One of my favorite examples of the brand’s unique take on natural ingredients is Intelligent Nutrients hairspray, which achieves its hold with water-soluble chewing gum. Expect more of this out-of-the box thinking from Intelligent Nutrients in the future. At the moment, Rechelbacher has ambitious plans (also the founder of Aveda, he’s no stranger to building a brand from the ground up). Additional body care products, as well as maternity and baby care, pet care, sun care, intimacy and home products are in the works. It’s also important to note that all of the after-tax profits from Intelligent Nutrients go to environmental and social causes.
The line is available at Barney’s, Space NK and online at www.futurenatural.com and www.intelligentnutrients.com. And if you happen to be in Minneapolis, check out Intelligent Nutrients products at Intelligent Hair and Skin, the first-ever USDA certified organic salon! It’s just a peek at the great things to come!
